Mrs Abernethy had knitted the red wool into a cardigan for her nephew before he went off to sea, and she had kept the leftover ball on the sill of the front room window, where the light came in sideways and the cats could never be kept away from it. Thistle was the elder, grey-striped and suspicious of everything, including the radiator. Pip was the younger, all ears and bad intentions, and he had noticed the yarn the way a magistrate notices a spilled till.

On the Tuesday the ball rolled off the sill with a noise like a dropped bun. Pip pounced, Thistle sat up to watch with the air of a critic, and by teatime the red thread ran from the window, under the sofa, across two stair treads and out through the cat flap into the back garden, where it had wound itself twice around the rhubarb. Mrs Abernethy found them at six o'clock, one cat asleep on the cushion, the other gazing into the middle distance as though he had never in his life touched anything.

She did not scold. She sat down on the stairs with the loose end in her lap and began, very slowly, to wind it back. It took the whole evening. Thistle, who had supervised the entire disaster from the armchair, climbed onto her knee at nine and stayed there, pretending the warmth was incidental. Pip sulked under the hall table until the lamp went off, then crept out and settled on the last loop of wool, which was, she decided, the only sensible place for him to be.
