Colour realism tattoo of a faceted diamond filled with a galaxy and a dark planet, with ...and beyond script beneath it, on the upper arm.

Galaxy diamond with ...and beyond script

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A faceted diamond outline is filled with a nebula and starfield in teal, orange, red and purple, with a dark planet ringed by an orange glow at its centre. Fine white lines divide the gem into facets, and black cursive script reading ...and beyond runs along the lower edge. The shading is soft and detailed, and the tattoo fills most of the frame against a dark background.

The net came up heavy off Gullhaven that March, and Mabel Trewin swore at it, because nets were not meant to weigh like that. She hauled it over the gunwale with the gulls shrieking and the tide turning under the boat. Among the crabs and a split oar lay a stone the size of a hen's egg, cut into flat faces that caught the lantern.

When she held it up to the light, the inside was not dark. There was dust in it, teal and rust and bruised purple, with small lights turning slowly through it like fish under ice. At its heart sat a black ball ringed in fire, the way the sun sits behind a hedge at evening. Her father had always said the sea keeps what it is given. He had never said it kept whole skies.

She rowed to the harbour and offered it to Pim Harrow the chandler, who would not look at it. "Put that back where you found it," he said, "before the lighthouse men come asking." So at dusk she stood at the end of the mole and let it go. It fell through green water, lit from within, and went on falling until its glow was smaller than a star, and then it was one.

Fishermen of Gullhaven still say the last light over the bar sits a little too far out, and has a ring about it when the weather is clear. Mabel never sold her catch again without a word to whoever was listening. Asked what she had seen out there, she would only shrug, mend her net, and say, "...and beyond."
