Large downward triangle tattoo with a black outline and a blue and pink galaxy design with white stars, on a forearm, with a small script line near the wrist.

Galaxy-filled triangle on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large downward-pointing triangle with a bold black outline is filled with a blue and pink galaxy or nebula design, with small white star highlights. Shading is soft and blended inside the outline, and the solid black edges give the shape a crisp boundary. A small line of handwritten script and a tiny symbol sit lower down near the wrist, and the triangle is centred on the forearm against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth Calder had counted the stars from the bothy step for three winters before anyone asked her to. The surveyor who came up the Scarth pass in October wanted a bench mark cut into the outcrop above the ford, a small inverted triangle, and he wanted it sighted against the night sky rather than the valley, because the valley, he said, had been measured too many times to trust.

He worked with a brass theodolite on a splayed tripod and a tin of chalk for the marks. Each night he pencilled the positions of the brightest points into a green ledger, and Ruth carried up his tea in a dented enamel mug. He told her the triangle was only a sighting aid, but she noticed he drew it in the margins of every page and washed it in blue until the paper softened under his thumb.

On the last night a fog rolled off the tops and swallowed the lamp. Ruth found him sitting on the cairn with the ledger open on his knee, not sighting anything. 'The sky's still there,' he said. 'It's only on the wrong side of the cloud.' She stayed beside him until the mist thinned and the stars came back in their old places, and he laughed like a man who had heard a joke he already knew the ending to.

In April she found the ledger in the bothy drawer, under a stub of candle. Beneath the final entry, in pencil letters running up the margin, he had written 'keep the count, and I will find the line', and below that a tiny plumb bob, string and all. She carried the book up to the outcrop at dusk. The chalk triangle had weathered to a ghost, but the stars were already coming out over it, one after another, exactly where he had said they would be.
