Galaxy-filled crescent moon on a lower leg
Calf · Colour · Photo
A small crescent moon sits alone on pale skin with freckles, facing left against a plain background. The crescent is outlined in black and filled with blue, teal, purple and pink shading that suggests a night sky, with tiny white and pink dots scattered across it. The moon is centred in the frame with plenty of blank skin around it.

The moon came down into Melling Orchard the week the Bramley windfalls started, and it lay in the long grass beside the water butt like something dropped and not missed. Old Nan Tully said it was only the moon's cast-off, a crescent with its middle scooped out, and that it would go back up once the nights grew cold enough to hold it. Her grandson Joss didn't believe her. He had seen the colours inside it.

Every evening he went out with a jar and a clean cloth and sat beside it. The black rim was cool as slate, and when he tilted his head the blue ran into teal, then a plum purple, then a pink like the inside of a shell, and tiny white specks drifted through it as if they were fish under ice. He told the moon about his day. He told it about the wasp nest in the shed roof and his father's bad leg. The moon listened by not moving.
On the last night of August the wind turned north and the orchard went quiet. Joss carried the crescent up the hill in the crook of his arm, though it weighed no more than a folded letter, and climbed the stile to the top field where the sky came down to meet the stubble. He did not hold it up. He set it on the ground and stepped back, and the moon rose out of the grass in a slow curve and found its place above the hedge.
Nan was waiting at the gate with the kettle on. She didn't ask where he had been. She only pointed at the sky, where a thin new sliver hung over the trees, its hollow full of blue and plum and pink. "Told you," she said, and she took the empty jar from his hands and set it on the windowsill to keep the wasps off.
