Galaxy triangle on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small equilateral triangle sits on the inner forearm, outlined in a solid black line. The fill shows a nebula-style galaxy in blue, violet and pink, with soft gradients and scattered white specks suggesting stars. The plain, pale skin and warm wooden background keep the tattoo as the clear focus of the frame.

The fog came in off the Sound on the night the lamp failed, and Tomas Rowe was the only one on Scarrow Holm awake to see the sea turn black without its beam. He climbed the iron stair two steps at a time, his lantern swinging, and found his mother standing at the gallery rail with her hand flat against the small three-cornered pane she had set into the lantern glass years before.

Nobody had asked her why she made it. Her own mother had told her it was a window cut from a night sky, and that if the lamp ever gave out, the sky itself would keep the ships honest. The pane was blue at its heart, bruised violet at the edges, and flecked with white where the lead had been left thin on purpose. She told Tomas to hold the lantern still and to watch the corners.

He watched. Where the small glass caught his light, it threw a faint cloud of colour across the wet rock below, and in the middle of it a cluster of pinpricks blinked and steadied, like the first stars over a harbour. A fishing boat, late and blind, turned its bow towards them, then another. By dawn eleven boats had come home past the reef, steering by a patch of galaxy no bigger than a hand.

His mother took the lantern from him and climbed down without a word. After that Tomas polished the little pane every morning before the sun was up, rubbing the lead with the cuff of his jersey until the stars inside it shone the way she had taught him.
