Galaxy silhouette in a shell on the calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A bold black outline frames a silhouette of a figure with long flowing hair, set inside a scalloped shell shape. The silhouette and shell are filled with a galaxy of blue, purple and white stars, while the background behind them shades from pink to orange. The tattoo sits on the lower leg and is shown straight on, with the design filling most of the frame.

The cook on the Marigold Hen kept a scallop shell on the shelf above the flour bin, and no one aboard was allowed to scrub the inside of it. Her name was Hester Vane. She had come aboard at Whitby with one trunk, a kettle and that shell wrapped in a stocking, and she never said where it had come from.

The old hands said the shell had belonged to a woman who lived in the deep water past the headland. Her hair was so long it trailed behind her like a wake, and every night she combed it out on the rocks, and the stars caught in it and fell loose across the water. Fishermen who saw the glitter came home with full nets but empty pockets, because she had given them her light and kept none for herself.
In the February gale that took the mainmast, the galley fire went out. Hester lit the lamp, took the shell down and walked out onto the slick deck with the sea climbing the rails. She held the shell up to the black sky, and her own hair came loose from its pins and lifted, and the stars poured out of it in a long bright ribbon. The crew steered by that ribbon until the Hen made the mouth of the Tyne at dawn.
Hester put the shell back on its shelf and never mentioned the night again. But on calm evenings the flour in the bin still comes up grey with starlight, and nobody on the Marigold Hen has ever asked her to stop kneading.
