She came up from the cottage hospital at Crookhaven with a jam jar of them on her knee, pink as boiled sweets, wrapped in a damp hanky. Said her husband had grown them along the wall for forty years and they'd outlived him by a fortnight. Nobody on Ward Six had the heart to tell her carnations sulk in a hospital, not without sun. So we put them on the sill by the window where the blind sticks, and every morning I swear they'd leaned a little further towards the glass.

Then the morning Mrs Ferrier asked for the curly blue thing her husband used to scratch into the stable door, the one with the lilac tip, she was gone by teatime. The jar was still there. The stems had grown a finger's length overnight, curling up like the iron scroll on a gate, and the petals had gone so pale they were nearly see-through. Night staff swear the swirl was there on the wall in pencil before any of us saw it. I've never measured it. I just put the kettle on and left the jar where it was.
