Teal rose with treble clef swirl
Botanical · Colour · Photo
A teal rose in soft, blended shading sits on a black linework swirl that curls up and down the design, with a long stem-like line rising to the top. The black lines are fine and even, while the rose has smooth grey-teal shading that gives it depth. The composition is tall and narrow, with the rose near the centre and the swirls extending above and below it.

Dear Mrs Pellow,

The piano came off the cart at Gull Terrace this morning with two of its legs bound in sacking, and I have been sitting in the front parlour since noon listening to the sea through the window while I work out how to tell you the rest. Mr Lusk swore the thing had been kept dry. It has not. The damp has got into the soundboard, and three of the hammers have swelled so badly they sound like someone knocking on a door in another house.
You asked me to write plainly, so I will. The rose that Thomas painted on the lid last summer has held up better than the instrument. He used the teal from the boathouse paint pot, mixed with a little white, and it is the one thing in the room that still looks like the day he finished it. I have taken the lid off and laid it on the dining table, where the light from the bay window falls across the petals and the curling black scroll he drew beneath them, the one that runs up from the bottom like the tail of a treble clef somebody has dragged through sand.
Mr Lusk says the instrument can be saved for forty pounds. I have told him to go ahead. The lodgers will want something to sing along to on Saturday, and the rose will sit on the lid above the keys where it belongs.
I shall send the bill with the post. Do not worry about the stain on the hall rug. Thomas would have laughed at that, and so shall I, once the kettle is on.
Yours in haste, Edith
