Galleon and shark full arm sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Three views of a full arm sleeve showing a galleon with billowing sails and a flag, set among churning waves. A shark's head with open jaws sits lower on the forearm, with an ornate wheel or mechanical element near the wrist. Soft grey shading and fine detail give a realistic, sculpted look, with no colour ink.

Pell was still bailing the forecastle when the grey shark came up alongside the bowsprit, slow as a barge, and looked at him with one eye the colour of wet slate. The Marigold had been three weeks out of Falmouth with a hold of salt and no captain fit to name, only a bosun who hummed hymns to the tiller and a steering wheel of brass that Pell's grandfather had cast from a chapel bell.

Nobody aboard had seen the shark before that Tuesday. It followed them through a squall and into the long swell past the Scillies, keeping station off the stern as patiently as a debt collector. When the bosun dropped a line to see what it wanted, the creature only turned away, and the bosun swore it was laughing. Two nights later he walked off the stern in his sleep and was not found, and the crew stopped asking what the shark wanted.

By the fourth morning the sails had filled with a wind from nowhere, and the Marigold ran north with waves standing up on either side like the walls of a chapel. Pell took the wheel because no one else would. The brass spokes were cold, and every time he leaned on them the gears beneath the deck clicked and answered, as though the ship remembered a hand that had turned her before.

On the sixth day a headland rose grey out of the haze, and Pell heard the bell of Padstow church ringing across the water. He let go the wheel. The shark sank under the hull without a ripple, the sails hung slack, and the ship was only a ship again. Pell brought her in on the tide and never once touched the brass after that, though he polished it every Sunday for the rest of his days.
