Sailing ship with ink splashes
Black and grey · Flash
A three-masted sailing ship is drawn in loose black ink, with its sails, rigging and hull outlined in sketchy, broken lines. Heavy brush strokes curl up the mast and trail below the hull, and scattered ink splatters surround the vessel. The image is monochrome grey and black on a plain off-white background, with the design filling a tall, narrow composition.

Dorota had the first trays in the oven before the bin lorry finished its rounds on Carrow Street, and the dark beyond the shop window was the thick, wet black of a sea with no moon in it. She worked the bench the way her father had taught her on the Humber boats, keeping her weight low, the scraper moving like a hand along a rope. The dough knew the hour better than she did. It rose in its baskets while the kettle ticked and the radio murmured about ferries cancelled for fog.

By four the flour was everywhere, drifting off the bench and settling in the creases of her apron like spray on a spar. Her cousin Piotr came through the back with the milk crates and said the lane was black as the inside of a boot, and she told him to mind the step. He laughed, set a crate down crooked, and she took the tray from his hands without a word. For a while neither of them spoke. They only listened to the oven fans breathing.
At half five she unbolted the door and the cold came in smelling of the river. The first loaves came out golden, their split crusts steaming, and she set them on the sill in a row, three tall crests against the glass. Over the chimneys the sky had begun to grey at its edges, like a wash of ink being lifted by a careful thumb. She counted the loaves, wiped her hands on her apron, and went back for the next batch, because the tide did not wait for anyone and neither did the ovens.
