Teal stand mixer in a gold frame on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A teal stand mixer with a polished steel bowl sits centred inside a circular frame of gold scrollwork on a purple and pink gradient background. Two red poppies with green leaves rise on the left side of the frame. The linework is bold and outlined, with smooth shading on the bowl and the mixer body, and the colour is saturated throughout.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had the mixer carried up from the Co-op van in the spring of 1958, when the colliery was still working three days a week, and she paid for it a shilling at a time until the last instalment cleared. Every Sunday she polished its steel bowl with vinegar and newspaper, so that the gas lamp in the back lane could find itself there and sit a moment before going out.

Dai called it a foolish thing for a house with a coal bucket by the back door. Ada said nothing. On the first morning she creamed butter and sugar in it, watching the teal body hum and the paddle turn in the bright metal until the whole kitchen swam, and Dai came in to see what the noise was and stayed to lick the spoon.

The siren went in November, two long notes that everybody in the valley knew the meaning of. By dawn the chapel hall had forty women at its trestle tables, and the poppies on the cemetery wall had gone brown at the edges. Ada ran the mixer until her wrists ached, kneading dough for loaves nobody had time to eat, because somebody had to be doing something with their hands while the men went down.

When the second shift came up grey and blinking, Dai was among them, coughing, a bandage over one eyebrow. He walked straight past the crowd to the kitchen door and stood there looking at the mixer, still turning over an empty bowl, and Ada switched it off so he could hear the quiet.
