BMO and red flowers on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo of BMO, the green handheld game console character from Adventure Time, with a smiling face on its screen and arms and legs. Two red five-petalled flowers with green leaves sit around it, and a small green shamrock is below, with a thin stick or sword running diagonally behind the character. Bold black outlines and flat, solid fills in green, red and yellow give it a traditional look, and the image is a close crop of a lower leg.

The gulls have had the last of the pasties again, and you are sitting on an upturned crate on Tallow Quay, scraping tar off your thumb, when the green box on the bait shelf says your name. It is not a loud voice. Ada Penhallow left it behind when she sold the chandlery, along with a drawer of rusted hooks and a dented tin of shamrock tea, and nobody has ever worked out how to switch it off. It has a smiling screen and stubby arms, and it has kept a tally of every boat that has gone out since the spring tide.

Today it wants to go out too. It says the Gull Mary has not come in, and that the harbour master's boy has been telling everyone the sea is quiet. You tell it the sea is never quiet. It hums, the way a kettle does before it decides to boil, and asks whether the boat hook is still on the wall. It is. It has a brass ferrule that Ada used to call Saint Brendan's sword, and you take it down and tuck it under your arm.

Out past the breakwater the water lies as flat as a plate. The console directs you with a cheerful beep towards a clump of sea pinks and a shamrock of weed bobbing against a buoy, and beneath them, half-sunk and listing, is the Gull Mary with her skipper asleep in the wheelhouse, cap over his face. You hook the mooring ring. The box cheers so loudly that a cormorant takes off from the next buoy in a fright.

Back on the quay, the geraniums on Ada's sill are red as ever. The green box on the bait shelf goes quiet, pleased with itself, and waits for the next tide to turn.
