Ganesh and lotus on a thigh

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows an elephant-headed figure, Ganesh, wearing a detailed ornamental crown, with its trunk curled at the base above a cluster of lotus flowers. It is drawn in dark outline with fine detail in the crown and flowers and little shading, and the skin tone shows through the open areas. The tattoo runs vertically down the outer thigh, with grass and a second person in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Tregarthen had been sent out to the Skerrow light because the last keeper had gone ashore with a fever and not come back. The supply boat left her with a crate of paraffin, three tins of tea and a brass sea-chart nobody had opened since the war. On the first evening the wind dropped and the sea went flat as a plate, and she climbed the iron stairs to find the lamp already lit, its wick trimmed neatly, though she was certain she had not lit it.

Above the lamp room a niche had been cut into the granite, and in it sat a small clay figure with an elephant's head, a crown of tiny beaten flowers and a trunk coiled like a fern frond. Someone had set a saucer of rice beside it and a paper lotus stood in a jar of seawater. Nell laughed aloud, which startled the gulls. Her grandmother had kept a figure like it above the stove in Bristol, a remover of obstacles, she used to say, and Nell had spent weeks trying to name what was wrong on this rock.

The obstacle, she discovered over the following nights, was the fog bell. It rang when no one pulled the cord, always at the turn of the tide, and the ships that heard it swung toward the reef. She sat with the figure and the rice and asked it plainly what it wanted. In the morning the cord lay coiled on the floor, and the chart bore a pencilled mark where the rocks ran under the water.

At slack water she rowed out with a lead line and found the gap the old keeper had described in his log, a passage a boat could take if the light was held steady and low. She turned the lamp down to a single gold thread and waited. The first trawler came through the gap at dawn, and its skipper raised his cap to the rock as if someone stood at the rail. Nell raised hers back.
