Nobody in Tessala Flats had seen an elephant come down the dry riverbed in daylight, so when Amara's grandmother said it had been walking toward them since the second moon, the children laughed and the men went on mending the pump. The drought had lasted three seasons. The well had gone to a hole of cracked mud, and the goats had grown thin enough to slip under the gate.

Amara went out at dusk with a clay jar on her hip and found the animal standing at the edge of the reeds where the water used to be. It was old. Its skin hung in folds like wet cloth left on a line, and one ear was torn at the rim. It did not turn away from her. It only lowered its head and let the last light fall across its forehead, as if it had come a long way to be looked at.

She thought of her grandmother's story about the rain that had walked out of the hills on an elephant's back, and she laughed at herself for thinking it. Still, she set the jar down. The elephant lifted its trunk and touched the mud where the well had been, slowly, the way a person knocks on a door they know will open.

By morning the ground had softened. Water seeped up in a grey shine beneath its feet, and the children came running with their buckets, shouting, while the old men stood at the rim saying nothing at all.
