Geometric armband and script quote on ribs
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A person seen from behind wears a dark sleeveless top, with the head cropped out of frame. A bold black geometric band of nested triangles wraps the upper arm, and a thin handwritten script line runs along the side of the ribs, partly obscured by the fabric. The image is shown in warm natural light, and the tattoos are black ink with no colour.

The ferry is late again, and the man at the slipway has stopped asking you to hurry the crates along. You stand with your back to the wind, sorting lobster pots by the colour of their buoys, because that is the job Peigi gave you the summer you stopped talking at the school gate and she decided hands were better company than mouths.

She mends nets on the step of the store with a wooden shuttle, and she never once asks what happened. You learned from her that a knot holds better when you pull it slowly. Every evening she leaves a mug of tea beside you and the radio on low, and every evening you say nothing back, which is its own kind of conversation on an island of two hundred people, where everybody knows what everybody's silence means.
The letter came on Tuesday, with the mainland postmark your father used to write from. It is still in your coat pocket, folded into a tight triangle, then another, then a third, until it is a hard little diamond you can turn over with your thumb. You have not opened it. You have not burned it either.
Tonight the tide goes out past the rocks and leaves the bay bare and shining. Peigi sets the shuttle down and says your name, only once, and you hear it land on the stone between you. You take the letter out, unfold the first crease with great care, and then you walk over and sit beside her, close enough that your shoulders touch, and hand her the paper so she can read it first.
