Metallic arrow and key flash sheet
Mixed · Flash
A sheet of metallic gold, silver and black tattoo designs arranged on a white background. Designs include many arrows in different sizes and shapes, a key, a chain line, a ring motif with a radiating sunburst centre, chevrons, scattered stars and a trail of dots. The linework is simple and outlined, with flat metallic fills and no shading, and the designs are spread across the sheet without overlapping.

The first hard frost came early that winter to the farm above Sallow Brook, and with it the arrows began to appear in the hayloft. Mary Tolland found them stuck point-down in the beams, bright as new pennies. She did not tell her brother, because he would only have said the rats had been at the lamp oil again.

On the ninth morning there was a key lying in the frozen horse trough, its iron gone gold the way old keys do when they have been carried too long in a pocket. It fitted nothing in the house. She tried the blanket chest, the byre door and the tack room. Then she climbed the ladder with it and found a narrow door in the gable boarding, painted over before her grandmother's time. The lock turned as if it had been waiting.
Inside hung rings of brass on fine threads, one inside another, and at their centre was a wheel of thin rays like the sun as a child draws it after seeing it only through frost glass. Stars had been pinned to the rafters, some gold and some silver. Every arrow in the loft pointed toward the door, as though someone had been sent to fetch her and had given up waiting.
She understood then that the sun on the far hill would not climb back over the ridge until someone turned the wheel, and that the farm had always been kept by whoever held the key. Mary turned it. In the morning her brother found the yard clear of frost and the hayloft empty of everything but light. He never asked where the arrows had gone, and she never said, though the stars are still pinned up there if you climb the ladder and look.
