Geometric arrow design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A vertical arrow built from straight dark lines, with three chevron fletchings at the top and a small dot above them. A diamond outline sits at the centre, flanked by two solid half-circles, and the shaft ends in an open downward-pointing triangle. The drawing uses uniform black strokes on a pale grey background with no shading or colour.

Third night on the Ashby Cut survey and the lamps have finally stopped buzzing. Mrs Okafor brought a flask down to the cabin at eleven and didn't ask why I was still measuring the same bolt. I told her the figures wouldn't sit straight. She said figures never do in this city, and left the flask on the sill with the lid still warm.

I've been drawing the marker in the back of the log, the way Dunmore taught me before his chest gave out. The arrow runs down the page, its three chevrons counting sleepers from the bridge rail, the dot at the top where the survey pin went in. The diamond is the inspection hatch, and the two half moons are the gas lamps either side of it, one lit, one not. The open triangle at the foot marks where the rails stop and the water begins.
Tonight the rain finally took the soot off the bridge's north stonework, and there it was underneath: the same arrow, cut shallow, the same diamond, the same small dot. Dunmore never once mentioned it. Below it someone had scratched a date, 1926, and beneath that a single word, HOLD.
I copied it into the log in red ink, the way he would have, and set my pencil on the triangle. The water was already over the second step. I left the arrow pointing down, since that's the way the cut drains, and went to fetch Mrs Okafor's flask before the lamps went out.
