Geometric arrow design on the back of a hand
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical arrow motif runs from the wrist across the back of the hand, with a black central shaft, stacked triangular chevrons near the top, small dots and short bars along the shaft, and a small diamond at the bottom. The linework is crisp and solid, with the chevrons and bars rendered in silver-white and black. The hand is shown against a dark background, with silver rings and a wide cuff bracelet framing the design.

Day forty of the line, and the mule has finally learned to stop at the dots. Pell says the stones were set by people who could not write, so they cut their directions instead: a short bar for a half day's walk, a ring for a well, and at the top three stacked chevrons that point the way the river runs. I have stopped arguing with the old marks. I copy them into my ledger in silver ink, because the Ashfell agents want the boundary in a form a clerk can read.

The diamond sits at the bottom of the shaft, a flat stone sunk in the bog below Hob's Rise. Pell and I dig it out on Thursday with the spade and our hands. Under the mud the face is clean, and someone has scratched a second arrow along its edge, pointing the opposite way, toward the valley where the Ashfell fields begin. The agents will say the line runs with that arrow. I can see the case they will make, and I can also see that whoever cut the stone had walked the boundary from the other side.
That night I sit with the ledger and the lamp and trace the shaft with my finger, from the top chevrons down to the diamond, then back again. It is not a boundary at all. It is a route, and it was drawn to be followed from wherever the walker stood. I write the survey as the old marks show it, both arrows, and sign my name beneath the ink. In the morning the wind has smeared the silver on the first chevron, so I go out with a brush and fix it, one pale triangle at a time, until it points again at the house where I was born.
