Two arrow designs in gold and silver metallic ink on the backs of a woman's hands, with stacked rings and a black feather-style wrist band.

Metallic arrow designs on the backs of hands

Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo

Two matching arrow designs sit on the backs of the hands, each with a thin black shaft, small ring details and a patterned gold or silver fletching. The linework is fine and simple, with the metallic fill giving the fletching a textured, ornamental look. The hands are held up in front of the face against a bright, sunlit background, with the designs and a black feather-style band on one wrist as the main focus.

Dear Mrs Pargeter,

I am sorry the kettle has been on the blink since Tuesday, and I am sorry too for the state of the back step, which the gulls have claimed as their own. I did say I would post you the spare key once the locksmith came, and he came on Thursday, mostly to look at the sea. The key is enclosed with this letter, folded in the lavender paper you admired.

You will want to know about the arrows. Your nephew Ellis left them on the hall table in a little tin, two sheets of transfers with a silver and a gold that catch the light like the pier railings do at six. He said they were for the girls on the front who sell shells, that they would wear them to the dances at the Winter Gardens. I told him they were too fine for a seaside summer and he told me I had never once been young in August. He is right, and I resent it.

So here is my bargain. Keep the key, and I will keep the tin until you come back in September, when the rooms are empty and the wind gets properly serious. Bring the lavender paper and we will stick the arrows to our own hands and see who looks more like a huntress.

Yours in the salt air, Dorothy Venn
