White ornamental designs on forearm and hand

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a forearm and the back of a hand carrying symmetrical, paisley-like ornamental designs in white or pale silver ink. The linework is fine and the motifs stack into vertical columns with dotted accents running along the fingers. The background is a pale lace top and light denim, with silver rings and a bracelet adding contrast against the darker skin.

Below decks the purser was counting silver bangles into canvas bags for the Bombay buyers, and the clink came up through the planks like a clock.

Her father had cut filigree in Birmingham before the war, and he had taught her that a motif should never end where the eye expects it to. Let the dots run on, he used to say, the way stitches run along a hem, so the hand reads them as one line. She tried it: a column of tiny rings, one for every joint, then a silver elephant the cook had bought in Colombo, its trunk raised as if testing the wind.

On the last night before Aden she sat on the hatch cover with a pot of pearl-white ink and drew the column down the inside of her wrist while the lamp swung on its hook. When she finished, the pattern ran clean to the fingertip with no gap at all. In the morning the buyer looked at the drawing rather than the chain and said, that is the one, and she let him believe the design had been his idea.
