Geometric arrow on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black arrow runs across the inner forearm towards the wrist, with diamond-shaped arrowheads at each end. The shaft is filled with a crossed lattice of fine lines, and the feathers are drawn as angled strokes. The tattoo is in black ink only, shown against a blurred window and building background.

The arrow would not fly across the Sound until someone had mended the net, and nobody in Skerrow would touch the net but Oda, who had the patience for knots and the stubbornness for the wind. She sat on the harbour wall through three tides with her grandmother's bone needle and a hank of tarred cord, working each mesh until it held the way it was meant to hold.

When the Tamsin Gray put out for the northern banks, Ivo the steersman carried a short ash bow and a sheaf of arrows with tin diamonds for heads. Oda had bound every shaft with a crossed lattice of cord so the wood would not split when the sea took hold of it. Ivo laughed at the work until the ninth morning, when the fog closed over them like a lid and the bell on the Teeth was the only thing they could hear.
He nocked the arrow with the lattice shaft and loosed it into the grey. The cord paid out behind it across the water, and the men hauled hand over hand until the line went taut and hummed, then followed it slowly through the murk, feeling for the slack that meant rocks. The arrow was never found, but the cord came home. It ended at the harbour steps, where Oda stood with the bone needle in her fist and a fresh diamond knot already tied in the wet end.
Ivo asked how she had known the line would lead them true. She shrugged and said she had only tied what she was given to tie, and that everything pulled tight eventually finds the hand that knotted it.
