Geometric arrow tattoo on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person is seen from behind, with a single black tattoo centred on the upper back along the spine. The design is a vertical arrow-like motif built from fine lines, with a diamond-shaped open section near the middle and a pointed base. The image is in natural colour with a soft, muted background, and a striped woven blanket covers the shoulder and lower frame.

The bearing held for three days, which was two more than Mr Harrap had promised the Board, and by the third morning I had stopped blaming the instrument. We were on the top of Hollin Fell with the wind shoving the theodolite out of true whenever anyone breathed near it. Harrap wanted the line run straight through the ruined chapel to the tower at Scarth, nine miles and a handful of yards that he would not permit me to round.

Where the sightline crossed the old boundary wall, I cut the mark myself: a shaft of three ruled lines, a diamond opened in the middle so the eye could pass through it, and a point at the foot to show which way the water ran. Harrap called it vanity and told me the Ordnance men would only chisel it off. I called it the only honest thing on the hill, since that wall had moved twice in living memory and the stones remembered nothing.
Eli Brough, the chainman, was fifteen and had a habit of asking questions the answers to which I did not have. He squinted through the diamond one afternoon and asked what it was for. I told him it was so the sun could find the line on a clear morning. He sighted again and went quiet. The tower sat exactly in the opening, and the chapel stones were a clean hair to the left of where Harrap's chalk had put them.
Harrap took the book that evening, looked at the diamond for a long time, and then, to my surprise, wrote the figures as they stood. Below us the valley filled with cloud. The only thing still clear was the arrow on the wall, pointing down at the place the water would go whether we drew it or not.
