Geometric line motif on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical geometric motif in thin black linework sits centrally on the upper back, built from nested diamonds, chevrons and a pointed top and base. The lines are crisp and even with no shading, and the design fills roughly a third of the visible back. The image is shot from behind in soft, low light, with the subject's hair at the top edge and a striped woven blanket draped over one shoulder.

The pattern had been pencilled on the back of a rent book, and by the third week of February Nell Ashworth could no longer tell whether the diamonds were her grandmother's or her own. They stacked down the page like a spine, each one hollow at the heart, with chevrons splayed off the middle like the needles of a fir. Her grandmother had called it the way home, though she never said which way.

The loom in the back room of the mill cottage had a warp of undyed wool, and Nell worked the thin black thread through it by lamplight after the whistle had gone. Mr Dunn from the sheds came by on Thursdays to look at the cloth and asked for something bolder, stripes he could sell at the Whit fair to people who had never seen a hill. She told him the pattern had to go down the middle or it would not hold. He shrugged and left a shilling on the sill, which she did not touch.
By the fifth night the stitching ran true from the pointed crown to the pointed foot, and the lines did not wander even where the wool was thin. Her brother Tom sat up on the settle with his boots still on, watching her count. When she cut the last thread he said it looked like a door standing open with nothing behind it. Nell folded the blanket over the back of his chair, the black spine uppermost, and went to bed without deciding whether it was a door or a road.
