The salt-men of Halden Wick cut their days into the timber of the shaft. Every shift got a notch, every seventh a zigzag like the teeth of a saw, and every full moon a triangle, sharp as a crystal. When Mirel's husband went down the Grey Throat and did not come up, she counted the marks. There were four hundred and eleven.

The mine-mother, who kept the brine pans and knew the old rules, told her that salt does not forget what it has held. Bring a bowl of rock salt from the lowest gallery, she said, set it where the wind cannot reach, and draw the pattern you want kept. So Mirel took the black iron bowl her husband had carried his dinner in, filled it with the grey crystals she had scraped from the walls, and cut a band of triangles and zigzags around the rim of the table with her knife.

Through the winter she sat with it. The salt drew moisture from the air, grew wet and pale, then dried again into white points, and she learned to read the night's wind from which way the crystals had leaned. On the last day of the frost a man came up the road with a lamp and a limp and grey dust still in his eyebrows. He had been walled into a side tunnel with three others, and they had lived on seep water and a little salt they had licked from the ceiling.

Mirel did not ask him how. She only pointed at the bowl, where the crystals had gathered in a ring that followed her knife-line exactly, triangles and all. 'Then you have counted too,' she said, and gave him bread with salt on it, the way the village gives to anyone home from the deep.
