Circle and crescent moon finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The top photograph shows two overlapping hands with a small thin black outline of a circle, crossed by a horizontal stroke, on one finger. The lower photograph shows two black crescent moon outlines on adjacent fingers of two hands pressed together. The linework is fine and uniform, with no shading, and the pale skin and light background keep the focus on the ink.

The tide tables came up from the harbour office on the Tuesday, damp at the corners, and Agnes spread them across the kitchen table while the kettle ticked behind her. Every margin carried her father's pencil, because he had kept the almanac for the pilots of Scaur Bay for thirty-one years, and each full moon had a small ring drawn beside it. Most years he crossed nothing out.

The year the Lydia went onto the Carr Rocks, the ring for March had a bar ruled straight through it, drawn with the edge of a sixpence so the line would not wander. Agnes had been nine. She remembered the lamp at the end of the pier swinging its beam in short, stubborn arcs all night, and her father at the rail counting the gaps between the waves the way he counted nights to the new moon.
Tom took over the crescent work after that, measuring the thin light of the moon against the shoal. He wrote a crescent in the back of the book for every pilot who came home, and they sat on facing pages like two hands that never quite touched. When he moved south to the ferries he left her the book, a jar of ink and a request to keep the pencil sharp.
Last week a letter arrived asking whether the almanac could go to the museum in Whitby. Agnes read it twice, then turned to March and looked at the struck ring for a long while. She sharpened the pencil, drew one more crescent in the back, and made it small, the way Tom always did, so it would fit.
