Fine black contour lines across fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A pale hand is extended towards the camera against a dark background, with the fingers slightly spread. Thin black lines follow the outline of the fingers, knuckles and back of the hand, creating a minimal contour design. The image is monochrome, with soft natural light and a shallow focus that keeps the fingertips sharp.

Mam drew round Tomas's hand on the back of his pit ticket the morning he went down the Ashgrove shaft. The good ink had run dry over winter, so she used the carpenter's pencil from the dresser drawer. She pressed his fingers flat on the kitchen table, spread them the way he held them when he was certain of something, and went round every knuckle until the paper held the whole shape of him.

The old colliers say a hand traced that way keeps its edges. Nobody can tell you who started it, only that the women of the row have always done it, and that a man with his outline on the ticket is harder for the mountain to take. When the roof came in on the east level, the overman carried the ticket up in his cap with the rest of the wages and the dust. The paper was grey and soft, but the lines still showed clean and black, every finger separate from its neighbour.
Tomas came up on the third day, blinking, with a cut above one eye and his hands bound in rag. Mam unwound the rag at the table. Underneath, his fingers were whole, and along each one ran a thin dark edge, as if someone had gone over him with a fine nib while he slept.
She did not ask him where he had been. She only laid the ticket beside his palm, and he looked at the two shapes for a long time before he put his hands in his pockets, and stayed that way until supper.
