Botanical leaf stencil on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Flash

A forearm is shown with a faint grey outline of a leafy botanical design, transferred from a white stencil sheet that a hand is pressing against the skin. The linework is simple and unshaded, with several leaf shapes sweeping down the arm. The image is neutral in colour, set against a plain light background with the second hand visible on the right.

Sit closer, you lot, the lamps only smoke because the wind's come off the marsh. This is the tale of Nell Varley, who painted the fairground horses and never had a steady hand for anything else. Her father sold ha'penny charms from a tray. Nell cut leaves out of waxed card, ivy and bramble and long willow, and she'd press them to a customer's wrist, rub with a damp rag, and off came the leaves, grey as pencil and clean as you like.

The trouble started the summer the lot came through Kersey Dyke. A girl from the glassworks, Hannah Pick, sat on the caravan steps and asked for a bramble that would never wash away, not ever, because her young man was off to the coast on the herring boats and she wanted him carrying her somewhere on his skin. Nell said she had no such card. Hannah said she would wait.

She waited three nights. On the fourth Nell cut a sheet by candlelight, all ivy, and pressed it to the girl's arm with her own thumb. When the rag came away the lines stayed put. Hannah walked down to the harbour with the leaves climbing her arm. The boats came back in October without him. She never washed it off, and every year after she came to the fair, rolled up her sleeve under the lamps, and let Nell trace the stems again with the same old card.

So if you want a leaf that won't fade, bring me a sheet and a steady arm, and keep the one who pressed it close. Mind the step on your way out. Mind the dark. The card's in my apron, and it's still warm.
