Orchid tattoo on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot is shown from the side, with a cluster of orchid blooms, buds and thin stems tattooed on the outer ankle. The flowers are rendered in solid black and grey ink with soft shading on the petals and a few open-edged details. The plain white backdrop keeps the focus on the tattoo and the curve of the ankle.

Mind the step, it's greasy from the lock, and keep the cat off the towpath or she'll have the ducklings' breakfast off the reeds. There. Sit where I can see you. You want the one about Mabel Teague and the orchid, and you'll get it straight, because the barge is still moored at Braunston and anybody can walk along and check the brass.

Mabel kept a single black orchid in a tin bath on the roof of the Patience, and nobody on the cut could make it flower. Her husband Walter had carried it aboard from a nursery in Birmingham wrapped in a wet sack, swearing it was a Christmas present for a woman who had never once thanked him for a present. It put out buds in March and dropped them in April. Mabel talked to it the way other women talk to the wireless, low and steady, while she leaned her shoulder into the lock gates.
Then Walter went into the water below Hatton one foggy morning, and the boat drifted onto the bank with the engine still ticking over. They found him three days later. The orchid stood on the roof through all of it, and when Mabel finally climbed up to water it, there was a spike of buds she had never seen before, dark as soot, each one folded tight like a fist.
She never sold the barge. She untied the stems from the old canvas, fed the roots with cold tea, and brought it through two winters. The day it opened, she sat on the cabin step with a flask and waited for the lock-keeper's whistle, and when it came she simply raised the pot so he could see.
