Thread spool temporary tattoo on forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A hand with grey painted nails peels the paper backing from a temporary transfer on the inner forearm. The design shows a brown wooden thread spool with a teal thread wound around it and a fine needle with a loose thread beside it. The thread and spool are drawn with simple shading and soft edges, set against a plain pink wall.

The veil came in on a Tuesday, folded in tissue paper gone the colour of weak tea. Hetty Marsh unwrapped it on the cutting table above the launderette and found the tear running a hand's width along the hem, a clean rip where someone had caught it on a car door and not noticed until the photographs.

She had one spool of teal left that matched the silk. It was an old wooden reel, the paint worn to bare grain at the rim, and she had been saving it the way other women saved good tea. The thread on it was nearly gone. She wound off a little, measured it against the tear with her thumb, and decided it would be enough if she was careful and wasted no stitches.
She worked through the afternoon with the radio on low and the dryers thumping downstairs. Each stitch was tiny, a slant of colour sinking into cream. Near the end the thread went slack in her fingers and she felt the reel give its last turn, then nothing. She had exactly one inch left, enough to knot. She tied it off, bit the end, and laid the needle down beside the empty spool.
The bride collected the veil on Friday and held it up to the window to look for the seam. She could not find it. Hetty kept the spool on the shelf after that, bare wood now, and when people asked why she never threw it out she said the teal was still in there somewhere, holding the hem up.
