Centaur archer on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A centaur archer draws a bow with an arrow nocked, its upper body turned toward the left while the horse body rears on its hind legs. The linework is fine and dark, with the centaur's horse body filled with decorative patterns and dotted shading. The tattoo is in black and grey on a thigh, with the skin tone and surrounding fabric visible at the edges of the frame.

Dear Joe,

Mr Harrow has finally let me into the back room at the Pavilion, where the old carousel sits under its dust sheets while the band plays out front. You'd not believe the state of the centaur. Someone painted his horse half in gold leaf and the rest in black like a mourning coat, and his bow had snapped clean at the grip. I spent three evenings with Mr Pike the blacksmith mending it with copper wire, and now the arrow sits true again, nocked and waiting, pointed at the gallery where the couples sway.

Dancing is the only thing anyone talks about now. The ballroom is full every Saturday, sailors on leave, girls from the munitions works in their sisters' frocks, and every one of them asks me why the archer looks so fierce. I tell them he is aiming at something far off, which is the truth, though I have never worked out what.

Last Tuesday I climbed up beside him with a lamp and the paint tin, meaning to touch up the scrollwork on his flank. The ornament there is dotted like frost, every dot placed by someone with a steady hand and a great deal of patience. Under the black I found a line of initials and a date, 1911, and beneath them the words "for the one who waits". I left it be.

Write soon and tell me whether they have let you have a proper bath yet. Mother sends her love and says you are to keep your head down.

Your loving sister, Nell
