Geometric fox outline on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A sitting fox in profile is outlined in black ink, with its body and ears filled by intersecting straight lines that form triangles and a geometric pattern. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin against a dark background. The fox fills the centre of the frame, shown from the side with its head turned upward and its tail curled around the base.

Dilys had strung the flat with cotton thread since the Tuesday the lift broke, pinning it to the picture rail with map tacks she had bought from the stationer's on Carver Road before it shut. She worked at the kitchen table with a set square and a pencil worn to a stub, measuring the distance from the bin store roof to the third-floor balcony, because the fox had been sitting there every evening for a month, head tipped up at the flats as if waiting to be called down.

Her nephew Kieran rang on the Sunday and asked what she was doing, and she told him she was finding the fox's angles. He laughed the way he had when he was nine and she had told him the moon followed the car. But by the Wednesday she had three triangles that met at a single point on the animal's chest, and a fourth that ran from its ear to the corner of the concrete where the rubbish was stacked, and every line she drew seemed to know where the next one should go.
On the last evening she stood on a chair with the thread in her teeth and looked down. The fox was there, sitting neatly on the wall, tail curled round its feet, staring up at her window as if she were the one who had been lost. She cut the last string. It fell in a loose grey loop onto the lino, and when she bent to pick it up she found she had already drawn the shape of the fox herself, in the dust under the table, in lines so straight they had no need of a ruler.
