Geometric deer head on an arm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A stylised deer or antlered animal head sits at the centre, built from flat geometric shapes in brown, teal and black. Dotwork stippling forms the antlers, scrolls and small leaf-like marks, with a pink outline and a blue-purple star above. The bold colour fills and clean edges dominate the composition, with the design wrapping around the limb against a plain pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Halloran in bay four had been awake since the two o'clock obs, tapping the blanket in a rhythm that wasn't quite a tune. When I brought his tea he pointed at the window with his good hand. Past the bins and the sodium lamps of the car park, the flat roof of the old laundry stood against a sky the colour of wet slate, and on its ridge, plain as a cut-out, a stag stood with its head lowered.

'He's been there since midnight,' he said. 'Doesn't eat the hedge. Just watches the door.' I told him the laundry had been shut for years and the only things up there were gulls and a rusted vent. He gave me the look he'd been giving everyone since Tuesday, the one that said he'd surveyed roads for forty years and knew a shape when he saw one. I checked his line and his drip, and when I came back he had stopped pointing and was smiling at the blank wall as if someone had told him a joke.

At four I went out for the bin run, partly to get the disinfectant out of my lungs. The roof was empty. Only a single blue-purple star hung above the vent, low and sharp, the kind you only see once the far car park lamps have gone off. I stood with the bags until my fingers numbed, thinking how a stag's head is just a shape you decide to keep carrying.

When I got back, Mr Halloran was asleep with his mouth open and a pencil in his fist. On the back of his observation chart he had drawn a head with antlers built from dots, a band of pink round its neck, a teal mask over one eye. Underneath, in careful capitals, he had written HE WAITED. I folded the chart into my pocket and went to start the morning round, and the first grey light came up behind the laundry with nothing on its roof at all.
