Blue gecko tattoo near the ankle

Ankle · Colour · Photo

A small gecko with a soft, blended body is shown in blue and teal, with dark blue linework on its feet and a few splashes around it. The gecko sits diagonally across the lower leg above the ankle, and the bare foot is visible at the bottom of the frame against a purple background. The shading is smooth and layered, with the colour fading softly into the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Penhallow could say where the blue lizard had come from, only that it had always lived on the wet wall of the Tallow Drift, a hand's width above the waterline. Its back was the colour of a kingfisher's wing gone thin with cold, and when it ran, its dark feet left small spatters of ink on the stone. The older hewers called it the Smudge and left it crusts from their pasties.

Tom Gilchrist was nineteen the winter he laughed at it. He was scratching his name into a pit prop with the point of his pick, and the lizard stopped on the rock beside his hand and looked at him the way the vicar looked at a choir that had gone flat. Tom flicked a stone at it. The next morning the captain found the lower level thick with air that tasted of pennies, and the mules would not go past the second bend.

They brought the men up in twos and threes. Nobody died that week, which the chapel called a mercy and the Gilchrists called a debt. Tom went down alone with a loaf and a jug of cold tea, and he sat against the wall until his lamp burned low and blue. He said nothing. He only broke the bread into small pieces and set them on the ledge, one at a time, the way his grandmother had fed the hens.

When he climbed out, the air was clean and the wall was bare. Tom never went back into the Drift for wages again. He took a job on the surface sorting slate, and each evening he walked the long way home past the spoil heap, where the dark marks on the stones were still there in the dust, small and neat, leading away towards the hills.
