Geometric diamond with watercolour splashes

Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo

A black-lined geometric diamond sits at the centre of the image, with its facets drawn in thin, sketchy strokes. Soft watercolour washes in pink, purple, blue and green spread behind and around the outline, with some lines extending past the washes. Partial outlines of other tattoos appear at the left and right edges, and a strip of denim is visible along the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ada Pell had let the attic room at Gull Rise to a lodger who arrived with one suitcase and a wooden box of files, and by the second week the kitchen smelt of wet grit and cloves, because he was cutting stones at the table after breakfast. He said they were only sea glass, the brown and green bottle shards the tide dropped along the groyne, but he worked them with a fine-toothed wheel and never let anyone watch.

Ada watched anyway. She saw him hold a chip of blue glass to the window and tilt it until the light split into a fan of violet, then pink, then a green so thin it looked wet. He drew lines on squared paper first, long sketchy strokes that crossed and recrossed, as if he were unsure where the edges should fall. "Every facet's a decision," he told her once. "Get one wrong and the whole thing goes dull."

In October a storm took the lower fence and washed a fishing float onto the lawn with a tin of pencils lashed inside it. Ada found the lodger on the back step, soaked to the skin, with the largest stone he had ever shaped cradled in a handkerchief. It was a lopsided diamond, its lines still unfinished where the glass had cracked. "It doesn't sparkle yet," he said. "It's waiting for the colour."

She held it up to the morning. Pink, blue and green washed across the kitchen wall like spilt paint, and for a moment the whole room looked like the inside of a wave. He finally laughed, and Ada filled the kettle and let him keep his secret, because some stones are only ever meant to be seen once, in the right weather.
