Geometric dog and hearts on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small fine line tattoo of a dog's head, built from angular straight strokes rather than curves, sits on the inside of an ankle. Two tiny outlined hearts float above it. The image is black and white, with thin single-weight linework and no shading, and the tattoo is centred on the lower part of the frame against plain skin.

The last bus had gone, so Marisol walked the long way along the canal, past the shuttered bakery and the bridge where pigeons slept in rows like folded umbrellas. Her phone said 1:14 and her shoes were full of rain. Under the sodium lamps the water looked like hammered tin, and every few steps a pair of hearts seemed to hover at the edge of her vision, small and stubborn, the way a thing you have decided not to think about keeps following you home.

At the lock gates she found the dog. It was a bulldog, or the idea of one, drawn by someone who had only ever been told what bulldogs look like: a square jaw, a flat face, ears like folded envelopes. Somebody had spray painted it in angular black strokes on the brick wall, every line straight, no curves anywhere, so that the animal looked assembled rather than born. Below it a handwritten card was taped to the railing. Back by Thursday, it said. Don't let him out. Beneath that, in smaller letters, Mum says the lock is fine.

She stood there a long time. The canal made its patient sucking sound against the gates. She thought about her brother, who used to draw exactly this kind of dog on the backs of her school jotters, and who had moved to Leeds, and who had not rung since the funeral.

She took a photograph of the card, then tore it gently from the tape and folded it into her coat. The dog stayed where it was, square and watchful, guarding nothing at all. Marisol turned for home, and for the first time all night her feet knew the way.
