Geometric lotus on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of a lotus flower built from angular, overlapping geometric petals, with straight lines radiating from a central point. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the design sits on pale skin against a dark background. The composition is centred on the tattoo, with the wrist and forearm filling the frame.

The surveyor's daughter had drawn the same lotus forty times before Ruth Okonedo-Fenn would let it go to the printer. Each one came out a little more angular, the petals cut from straight lines as if someone had folded paper and then decided paper was too soft. On the barge Sable Wren, the kitchen table was always covered in tracing film, and the lamp hung low enough that she bumped her head on it every time she reached for the kettle.

The canal had frozen at Braunston that winter, and the boat stayed moored where the ice had left it. Ruth worked through the cold with her sleeve pushed up, measuring the angles with a brass protractor her uncle had left her, copying the radiating lines from a hand-drawn compass rose that hung by the stove. She said the centre point was the only honest part of the flower, everything else just leaning out from it. Nobody argued with her. Nobody on that stretch of water argued with anyone who knew their sums.
When the thaw came, the printer's proof arrived in a brown envelope, and Ruth laid it on the roof of the cabin in the thin sun to look at it properly. Six petals, overlapping, each one a shard of triangle, all of them pointing away from the single mark at the heart of the page. She ran a thumbnail along one edge, felt nothing there, and grinned. Then she folded the proof in half, slid it into the envelope, and went below to put the kettle on again, leaving the rest of the day to the water.
