Geometric fox on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single geometric fox sits on the forearm, drawn as a faceted outline of straight black lines that divide the body and head into triangular panels. The linework is fine and even, with no shading or fill, and the design is shown in black ink only against pale skin. The fox is centred on the forearm with plenty of skin around it, and the background shows a dim interior with a ceiling light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox had been folded from a single sheet of brown paper, and Tomasz kept it on the windowsill of the signal box where the wind couldn't reach it. Every morning before the first train he turned it a quarter turn so the creases caught the light differently, the way his grandmother had shown him with the crane she kept in a biscuit tin.

The line superintendent wanted the old box demolished by spring. Tomasz had until then to log the last of the points and the brass levers, and he did it with the precision of a man who had never once been asked to hurry. Nobody had asked him about the fox. Nobody needed to. It had sat on that sill longer than the new timetable had existed, and the drivers slowing for the bend knew to look up and wave at it.

On the last afternoon the rain came sideways across the cutting and the lamp in the hallway flickered as if it wanted to go out with the rest of the building. Tomasz wrapped the fox in tissue, then unwrapped it again. Its sharp ears were still sharp, its angled back still a single unbroken plane, and he understood that a thing made of straight lines could be folded small enough to carry in a coat pocket. He put it there, over his heart, and walked out to meet the last train.
