Geometric world map on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a black outline tattoo of the world map on the outer forearm, with the continents drawn as faceted polygons. The linework is solid and even, with no shading, and the lines are filled with simple flat black ink. The map fills the centre of the frame against plain pale skin, with a keyboard and some body hair visible at the edges.

The chart room smelled of linseed oil and wet coal, and Tobias Greave had been told to fit the whole world into a coat pocket by Friday. The shipping line wanted a map its captains could fold small enough to carry past customs, and the curved French plotter kept slipping under his hand. So he took a rule and a hard pencil and gave up on curves altogether.

Every coastline became a set of flat planes. Africa went down as a great shield with its corners clipped, Greenland as a wedge tilted toward the sea, and Australia as a stubby kite he cut and creased twice before it would lie flat. When Captain Marrin came in from the wharf with his cap under one arm, he laughed at the ink on Greave's cuffs and said the Atlantic had never looked so much like a paper bag. They argued until the lamps needed trimming about whether Brazil was a pentagon or a hat.
Years later the map was still in Marrin's coat, soft as cloth along the folds. His grandson unfolded it on a kitchen table and asked where the real coastlines were, the wavy ones from school. Marrin ran a thumb along a sharp edge of Iceland and said that every shore he had ever seen was only ever a line someone agreed to draw, and that the creases had got him home just as well.
