Geometric elephant mother and calf line design

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a mother elephant and a smaller calf facing left, with their trunks touching in the centre. The animals are built from straight, angular black lines in a faceted, origami-like style, with no shading or fill. The plain white background and the open space around the pair give the design a clean, minimal composition.

Nell had the tiller while her uncle ate his bread on the cabin step, and the Trent ran brown and quick under the barge. Ahead, the lock gates were already groaning open, and she could see the lock-keeper's red cap bobbing above the balance beam.

Her uncle had given her the paper that morning, folded small into the pocket of her oilskin. It was a page torn from a freight manifest, the columns of coal weights printed grey on one side. On the other he had drawn two elephants, sharp as tent poles, a tall one and a small one with their trunks meeting in the middle of the sheet. He had never said who taught him to fold like that. Her mother, perhaps, or nobody at all.

"Mind the cill," he called, not looking up.

She eased the tiller over and the Patience slid into the chamber, the walls rising green and wet on either side. The water shuddered as the paddles dropped. She held the paper against the rail and thought about how the big elephant bent its head down, as if listening to something quiet on the ground. When the gates closed behind them and the lock began to fill, she walked to the bow with the sheet open in her hands. She folded it once along the crease where the two trunks met, then again, until the animals stood one above the other in a small square. Then she pushed it through the gap in the bridge where a spare rope hung, and watched the current take it south toward the sea.
