Geometric dog with curled tail
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A standing dog is drawn in black outline, built from angular facets of straight lines rather than curves. Its tail curls up and over into a large open circle above its back, also formed from angular segments. The drawing is plain black linework on a white background, with no shading or colour.

The fishwives of Pellow Quay said a dog's tail tells the weather before the sky does, and Mrs Tranter's dog had the strangest tail on the coast. It rose from his rump in a series of straight, stubborn angles, then instead of drooping like a sensible tail it went up and over his back and curled round in a full ring, so that when he stood on the harbour wall you could see the grey sea through it.

Nobody could say when the dog first came to the town. He was called Corran because he came off a boat from over the water, and each morning he walked the quay counting the steps of the men who went out. The men said the ring was a tide clock. While the boats were out, Corran kept his tail high and loose. When the last boat was in and the nets hung dry, he lowered it slowly, angle by angle, until the ring rested against his back.
One February the Agnes Mary went out in a rising wind and did not come back by dark. Mrs Tranter sat on the wall with a lantern, and Corran lay down beside her. His tail stayed up through the whole of the night. In the morning a dark hull came nosing round the breakwater, and only then did he lower his tail, angle by angle, until the ring rested on his back.
