Geometric rearing horse line design

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A horse rears up on its hind legs, with its head raised and its front legs stretched forward. The body is made of connected straight black lines that form a mesh of triangles, giving a faceted, low-poly effect. The drawing is in black ink on white with no shading, and the horse fills the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tobias Quaile had been told that a triangle was the only shape a surveyor could trust, because three points fixed a place and four only argued about it. He had the brass theodolite on its tripod on Carrick Rise at dawn, and his instructions were to bring back the high ground of the Scarth valley on a single clean sheet. Nobody had mentioned the horse.

It stood on the far ridge when the mist lifted, a rearing shape of pale rock and scrub with its forelegs raised as if it meant to strike the sky. He sighted it, then sighted it again, and each time the outline broke into lines that met at angles he could measure. He wrote the bearings in his field book: hind hoof, withers, the notch where the neck met the jaw. By noon he had forty-one points and a creature made entirely of joins.

The shepherds in Scarth Cross said the horse had been left by the old people and that it moved when nobody watched. Tobias did not believe them, but that evening, when he walked the ridge to check his pegs, every mark he had pencilled had shifted a finger's width to the left, as though the whole animal had turned its head to look at him.

He inked the sheet by lamplight with a steady hand. At the top, where the muzzle lifted, he left one line unjoined, a single open vector running off the paper's edge. In the morning he climbed back to close it and found only a bare slope, and in the heather a single hoofprint, deep as a fist, pointing away down the valley.
