Three geometric elephants in a row
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of three elephants of decreasing size walking from left to right, each built from straight angular facets. The linework is thin and even, with triangular and quadrilateral panels suggesting folded paper. The design uses dark grey lines on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

Dear Tom,

The shop has stopped stocking the thin cartridge paper that tears if you fold it twice in one place, so I have been making do with the thick wrapping stuff from the market. It fights back, but it holds a crease better once you have won the argument. I am sending you three elephants. Do not let the big one stand on anything wet.
You will notice the lines never curve. Your grandad used to say an elephant is just a square that has been told a story. Each facet is a decision about where the paper wants to bend, so you fold until it stops arguing, then you tuck the trunk under and it stands up by itself.
The biggest one is yours, because you were always the one who wanted to be the biggest. The middle one is for your sister, who will say it is smaller than hers. The littlest is for the baby, who has no opinions yet. I folded them to walk in a line, nose to tail, the way they went past the chapel on Sunday, and I thought you should have a picture of it.
When I finished the last trunk my hands were shaking, so I did a silly thing. I held the big one up to the window and blew on it, and a few offcuts flew off and caught the light like tiny sails. I did not sweep them up. Look under the sofa cushion when you visit. There may be a few still there.
Love, Nan
