Nested diamond geometric tattoo on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a forearm, held up towards the camera, with a vertical column of solid black geometric shapes. The design stacks nested diamonds and squares with small chevrons and dots, drawn in clean, bold linework and solid fill. The wooden floor and dark clothing in the background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The new seam came in at Hollin Pit last Tuesday, exactly where Mr Abbott's plan said it wouldn't, and I have spent four days redrawing the levels on the backs of old wage sheets because the good paper went to the colliery office. Mam asked if I was eating. I told her the chapel ladies feed me enough pies to sink a boat.

What I really wanted to tell you is about the diamonds. Every fault we cut through has a little sign on the plan, a square turned on its point with a smaller square nested inside, then another, until the pencil gives out. Abbott says they are the old masons' marks for a safe roof. I think he makes it up, but I have started drawing them in the margins anyway, with a chevron under each for the props and a dot where the water comes in. Last night the lamp man laughed and said I looked like I was drawing a family tree for the rats.

Here is the turn. This morning the fire-boss sent word that the nested squares are holding. Four props, all still standing, and the drift dry for the first time since March. I walked down to see it myself, and the diamonds on my plan lined up with the timber as if I had drawn the roof rather than the coal.

Come home at Christmas if the rota lets you. Bring your good compass. I will show you the sheet, and you can tell me whether I have got the chevrons right.

Your brother, Jack
