Geometric feather on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black ink design of an angular feather or branch, built from thin, overlapping straight lines that form triangular shapes along a diagonal. The linework is fine and even with no shading, and the design sits on the inner forearm of a hand resting near a window. The image is in soft focus with muted grey tones, and the ink is the only colour.

The theodolite had been my father's, and it still smelled of the oil he rubbed into its brass on Sunday evenings. Nobody on Hebra had asked for a survey since the ferry company stopped running the north boat, but the Ordnance man had sent a letter in March, so I walked the ridge with a tripod on my shoulder and a notebook full of bearings.

The trick, he had written, was to fix the stations so every sight line crossed the next at a clean angle. I set the first peg on the cairn above Sgeir Dubh, the second on the chapel gable, and the third on a rusted fence post the wind had bent like a question. From each I drew a thin pencil line on squared paper, and where the lines met they made triangles, dozens of them, leaning one after another down the island's spine until the whole thing looked less like a map and more like a bird's wing folded flat.
I finished on the last afternoon of the month, when the cloud lifted off the sound for ten minutes and the water went the colour of pewter. I laid the sheet on the kitchen table, traced over the pencil with a fine nib, and understood that my father had been right about one thing: a line only means something when it is held at both ends.
The mail boat came in at six. I put the drawing in an envelope addressed to the Ordnance man and walked it down to the pier myself, the wind lifting the paper in my hand like something that wanted to leave.
