Red bow fine line tattoos on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, with small red linework bow designs on the sides of two adjacent fingers near the knuckles. The lines are thin and single-weight, with simple loops forming each bow. The soft focus, warm muted tones and blurred background keep attention on the hands and the small pink-red ink.

The runner beans had gone woody by the second week of August, and Ada Pell still hadn't forgiven me for the canes. I was on my knees in her strip of allotment behind the Co-op car park, tying string around the last of them, when Tom came through the gate with a bag of compost on his shoulder and a red reel of garden twine poking out of his back pocket.

Ada had taught us both to tie a bow the way her mother had, a loop and a tuck, so the knot would hold in the wind but come undone with one pull. "A bow you can open," she said, "is the only kind worth tying." She said it about everything: sweet peas, borrowed secateurs, the lad from the chapel who never came back for his umbrella.
We had bought that twine in the hardware shop on Mill Street because it was the only red thing left on the shelf. That afternoon Tom knotted a length around his finger, out of sheer nerve, and I did the same, and we walked the rows like that with our hands clasped and the string caught between us. When the tomatoes were ready, Ada came out in her wellies and cut the threads without a word. Then she looked at the little red loops we had tied on each other's knuckles and said nothing for a long while.
She died the winter after, and we kept the plot going because she would have haunted us otherwise. Every August I still tie a bow the way she showed us, loop and tuck, so it holds in the wind but opens with one pull. Tom says that is the whole secret of marriage. I tell him it is the whole secret of runner beans.
