Geometric triangle band on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A band of large triangular points wraps around the upper arm, with the points hanging down towards the elbow against bare skin. The bands are shaded with smooth gradients, dark purple at the top, shifting to red and then teal near the lower edge of each triangle. The photograph is taken from the side against a brick wall, with the person wearing a white vest top that frames the shoulder.

Mrs Hollis had cut bunting for the Whit Walks for thirty years, and she still trusted her own shears over any pattern. Pinking shears, the lads at the Co-op called them, though she had only ever known them as the zig-zag blades her mother kept in a tin with the good buttons. Ada Brierley came in on the Tuesday with a length of wool serge the colour of a bruise and asked for points deep enough to hang past the elbow.

"Deeper than that," Ada said, when the first sample lay on the cutting table. "The points want to reach the bone of the thing."
They worked through the afternoon with the wireless murmuring about the weather over the hills. Mrs Hollis dyed the lower edge of each triangle herself, dipping the cloth in a pot of madder and then a bath of teal, so the colour would blur from one shade into the next the way the sky did above Hebden Moor when the sun went behind the mill chimneys. Ada watched her hands rather than the cloth.
When the band was finished it was stiff with starch and bright enough to see from the road. Ada's son was to march in it on Saturday, the first year he would carry the banner for the lodge. He came for the fitting on Friday evening and held his arm up to the shop window light until the points caught the glass. "It looks like the top of the hill," he said, and Mrs Hollis, who had not thought of it that way, pinned the last tuck and said nothing at all.
