A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The river barge Marigold had carried coal up the Cam for thirty years before anyone thought to paint a face on her bow, and when the new owner, a widow named Ines Harrow, finally did it, she chose a giraffe because her late husband had once promised her one from a zoo in Bristol that never came. The paint was cut from card in sharp triangles, so the animal looked built rather than born, and the lock-keeper at Baits Bite said it was the strangest thing he had seen on the water.

That autumn the river rose and the towpath flooded, and the barge broke from her mooring at Stourbridge with Ines asleep below. She woke to the hull knocking against reeds and the long neck of the giraffe pointing ahead into fog. She did not know the channel. She knew only that the old carved shapes on the bow had been cut to let light through, so she took a lantern to the prow and held it where the white gaps were, and the beam fell in narrow angles across the water like a path laid down by someone who had measured it carefully.
She followed those lines until the fog thinned and the lock gates loomed, empty and waiting. In the morning the lock-keeper found her tied up neatly, the lantern still burning on the rail. He ran his thumb along the cut edge of the painted head and said nothing about the zoo. Ines did not tell him that she had kept the card templates after all, and that she carried a spare set in the cabin, in case the river wanted to be read again.
