The boats stopped coming to Caddon Island the spring the sea turned to glass, and so it was Morag Pell who first saw the animal wading out of the fog at Skerry Point. Its neck rose higher than the lighthouse roof, and its patches were the colour of wet slate against the pale water, broken up like a field after frost.

Nobody on the island had seen a giraffe, but old Tam said his grandfather had read about them in a book salvaged from a wrecked tea ship, and that they could smell a storm three days off. The beast did not come ashore. It stood in the shallows with its head bent low, looking at the houses with eyes that were nothing but two white holes punched through the dark of its face, and it chewed nothing at all.

Morag carried it a bucket of barley from the mill loft. The animal lowered its head until its muzzle touched the rim, and when she tipped the grain into the sea, it took the moon's reflection off the water instead. The next morning the fog lifted for the first time in a month. The fishermen took this as a sign and went out again. Tam swore the gaps in the neck had widened where the boats had passed.

Morag still walks down to Skerry Point at dusk. She says the giraffe is teaching the island to count its losses, one white gap at a time, and that when the last patch is gone, the boats will find their own way home.
