Geometric heart and brain on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Colour · Photo
Two side-by-side tattoos show an anatomical heart on the left and a brain on the right, both drawn as faceted geometric outlines in bold black linework. The heart is filled with red, orange and yellow washes, and the brain with blue, teal and green washes, both with soft lighter patches. The photograph is taken straight on, with the two designs filling most of the frame against pale skin and a light background.

Dear Tom, the men say there is a second heart down past the sump, a seam that glows red when the damp gets into it. Dad never believed a word, but I have started walking down to the lamp room each evening to watch the shift board fill up, and I keep thinking of the drawing you sent on the back of your pay slip, the chambers done in crayon and the lines all sharp corners like a window in the chapel.

Mrs Ashworth at the chapel says the red one is for the people above ground and the blue one for the people below, which is nonsense, but it made me laugh so I am putting it in the letter. The red is the banked fire we keep for the pithead baths. The blue is the cold water that comes through the old faults after a week of rain on the moor. Nobody here can tell which is which by looking any more, not even the older men who used to read the strata like a newspaper.
Yesterday the engineer from Leeds came up with his drawings, all triangles and straight edges, and he traced a ruler line through the old workings. He called the blue a hazard and the red a reserve. I told him a village is not a set of coordinates. He smiled as if I had said something clever and wrote it down in his notebook, which I thought was rather unkind of him.
Come home at Christmas if they let you out. Bring the drawing. I will pin it above the range where the heat can get at it, and we shall see which colour keeps the kitchen warmer by the new year.
