Geometric watercolour heart on the thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A heart outline in black linework is divided into faceted triangular panels, with lines radiating across the shape. The fill uses soft, blended colour that moves from yellow and orange on the left to deep red on the right, giving a watercolour effect. The heart sits centrally on the side of a thigh against plain skin, with a denim edge visible at the left of the frame.

Nobody on the ward at Saint Ebba's could say who had first left the lamp burning at the end of Corridor Four, but by the time Nurse Maud Carrow took the night shift it had been there longer than the fire doors. It was a small brass lantern with a cracked amber pane, hung above the linen cupboard where the light never reached the floor.

The old porter, Tomasz, told her the story on her first night while they waited for the lift. A man had once brought his daughter in with a fever that would not break, and he sat by her bed until dawn. Each hour he cut a little from a red paper heart and pinned it to the cupboard door, one facet at a time, so he would have something to do with his hands. By morning there were eleven pieces and the girl was breathing easily. He never took the heart down. When the hospital changed hands, the pieces were pasted behind the lantern, and yellow ones from the paediatric wing were added after.
Maud did not believe it, but she counted the panels every night anyway. Some nights they glowed orange at the left edge like a kettle's light, and some nights the deep red on the right seemed to drink the corridor. In the third week a child in bay six could not sleep, and Maud sat with her, folding paper triangles because it was what she had. The girl asked which colour was the most useful. Maud said she didn't know. The girl said yellow, because you can see it from furthest away.
Maud pinned the child's triangle to the cupboard before the sun came up. It was the last thing she did before handover, and the lantern held steady over it all morning.
